Compost

Farm composting: from raw material to finished compost

Organising manure and large windrows: receiving material, composting, maturation and application. Where turners and spreaders fit into the work.

Composting manure on the farm — BioFarmLab series

Farm compost production covers preparing materials, managing the windrow, maturation and using the finished compost. A turner works during production, mixing and loosening the pile. A spreader distributes finished compost across the growing area later.

When manure or plant residues arrive daily, one ever-growing heap makes the material hard to manage. It becomes unclear what has just arrived and what has completed the process. Working in batches restores that control.

Give incoming material its own place

Identify what the farm actually produces: types of manure, bedding and plant residues. Record their origin. This helps when preparing a mixture and later understanding how the pile behaves.

Separate the receiving area from material already maturing. A new delivery then cannot accidentally mix with an earlier batch.

Machines must be able to reach the windrow

When laying out windrows, allow for the turner’s working width, tractor access and manoeuvring space. A long windrow must be accessible along its full length. Plan water access before it becomes a problem during work.

Equipment choice therefore starts with available material and space. For a small tractor, see what to prepare before choosing a turner.

Every batch has a history

A label and starting date connect observations to the right material. Add its composition and the work carried out. With several batches, this brief record helps decide when to turn.

Leave room for maturation too. Intensive windrow management is one stage; the material still needs assessment before use.

Finished compost goes where it is needed

Once compost is ready, the next tasks are transport and application. A spreader helps here. Its role differs from a turner’s, so we select these machines for two distinct jobs.
